I’ve been a genealogist for over 30 years but made my first trip to Salt Lake City and the Family History Library 25 years ago. I’ve returned at least once a year since that first trip. Now, I’m preparing to make my first trip since the pandemic started. And something foundational has changed. JB’s Restaurant, for all that time a fixture for breakfast, has closed. They weren’t a great restaurant. But they were reliable, friendly, priced well and had great hours. I’m going to miss them.
Edit/Update – The trip was fine but I think I’m realizing the the Family History Library is doing themselves out of my business. I didn’t really have enough research that required access to undigitized film or published materials to keep me fully occupied for a week even with their reduced hours. And really – at this point I can do most of the routine research at the local Family History Center. Fewer of my travel dollars will be going to Salt Lake City businesses in the future. hummmmmmmm. I wonder if they intended this when they began making so many microfilms available via digitization.
