Perhaps I should call this the Ashers part 2….I descend from Matilda Asher daughter of Thomas Asher and his wife Sarah (surname currently unknown) Thomas, Sarah and their children appear to have arrived from outer space sometime around 1820 in Wayne County, Indiana. So who were Thomas and Sarah? Where did they come from and why? Who were their family and friends? There is a potential cluster of Asher men that I’ve been researching that might be related to Thomas. The key names are William and Charles and John. John appears in the 1820 Census of Indiana in Flat Rock township Delaware County. At the same time Thomas appears in Wayne County, Indiana. The two men are in the same age bracket but of course their residences may or maynot be nearby.
I think that this John is the same John who appears in the 1830 census in Rush County, Indiana. That would put him next door to Wayne County where my Thomas is still residing. And also in Rush County are a Thomas and Israel Asher who are younger than John. After a bit of searching, I’ve come to the conclusion that Israel is really named Issac but that is for another post. In the 1830 census there is also a Charles Asher in Clinton County. Matilda Asher McLeland and her husband John McLeland moved to Clinton County in 1834 along with a Thomas Asher who may or may not be Matilda’s brother. So now we start to see a web of proximity and possible relationship developing.
In 1840 John and Thomas Asher are in Boone County, Indiana along with Matilda’s husband (and Matilda’s grave!) There is a new potential player Cornelius possible son of John Asher in Rush County. But Isaac, Charles and the other Thomas have disappeared.
So what other evidence can be used to tie these Asher males together? Marriages? Land? Probate?
