A big thank you to cousin Darrel who went over the Asher timeline with a fine toothed comb and discovered errors and helped with additions. Rather than do a second post, I added Darrel’s notes and corrections to the existing timeline but put them in red. I, also crossed out the far too many errors. I’m so embarassed that I was so sloppy. Maybe I should turn in my certification! (I have got to remember to categorize posts)
The maiden name of Sarah Asher, Thomas Asher’s wife, was Sumpter. I’m looking for more info on her. I was told by my grandmother, Sarah and Thomas’s great granddaughter, that Sarah was somehow related to a General Sumpter. Other than that, I know very little, except she was probably born in N. Carolina. I have some information from Rebecca Asher Lowry, daughter of Sarah and Thomas, and wife of James Lowry, to present, if you want it.

I know there are many online databases that say her name was Sumpter but I haven’t found a single piece of actual evidence for that. There is a Thomas Asher who married a Sarah Sumpter in 1808 in Kentucky but no evidence that these are the same people who came into Indiana. The name Thomas Asher is just too common for me to be comfortable with this without better evidence.
Thomas & Matilda Baxter Asher were living in Scammon, Cherokee, KS in 1887. Matilda Baxter Asher died there August 1, 1898 & is buried in Lone Elm Cemetery in Columbus, Cherokee, KS. Thomas Asher married again on April 16, 1899 in Scammon, KS to Frances Mastrom Cline. He was 73 & she was 26. They had 3 sons. On his marriage license application, he stated that his father was Thomas Asher & that his mother was Sarah Sumpter. This marriage info can be found at Familysearch.org under Kansas, Marriages, 1840-1935. Thomas Asher died December 15, 1906 in Miami, Ottawa, OK.

Thanks for your comment. I have the record of Matilda’s death but I hadn’t found Thomas’ remarriage. I guess I assumed at his age another marriage was out of the question. I see at Familysearch.org the duplicate record but not the actually application. Do you know if that is available on microfilm via the FHL or can you share a scanned copy?
