“John McLeland, son of James and Jane McLeland was born March 25, 1897 in Clark county, Kentucky. At the age of seven years the family moved to Clinton county, Ohio where they resided 2 years , afterward removing to Indiana.
He was married to Matilda Asher in November 1829. Five children, three girls [3rd girl child unknown to researchers – infant death?] and two boys, were born to them. His wife died in 1841. He next married Martha Jane Koonz, in February 1843. Three children, two girls and one boy, were born to them. His wife died in July, 1853. He then married Marinda McKinzey [sic], in February 1855. To them were born six children [one infant death, unknown to researchers]. His third wife died November 30, 1877.
He joined the Christian Church about the year 1839. He was firm believer in the Apostolic doctrine. While residing in Lebanon, Ind., he was for many years deacon in the Church. Of late years he was unable to attend worship, or services of any kind.
For some years he made his home with Mrs. Matilda Hill, his oldest daughter by his second marriage.
All of the care and attention so necessary in caring for the aged was bestowed upon him by her and her family. She was his attendant during his declining years and his faithful nurse during his last illness. He passed peacefully away at her home Friday evening, Dec. 22, 1893, being 86 years, 9 months and 28 days old.
His surviving children are nine, all of whom were present, excepting a son and daughter who reside in Kansas.”
