Matilda was the oldest of John’s children to remain in Indiana. She married in 1862 and moved to Henry County. When John began suffering from dementia in the late 1880’s she and husband John Hill provided John with a caring home. John Hill was named John McLeland’s legal guardian in 1889 and remained so until John’s death in 1893. Although these two portraits were in the collection of Thomas Asher McLeland and Caroline Decker there were no photos of Matilda’s children – at least none that have been identified to date.
