Benjamin Clifford (B. C.) was the youngest surviving child of Thomas and Caroline. His life appears to have been full of troubles – his wife Bertha Beckley left him after just 7 years of marriage and took with her their two young children who appear to have lost most contact with their father. Bertha left behind their 17 year old adopted daughter Jessie Young who was sent to live with Benjamin’s older brother James Riland McLeland and his wife Nellie. Benjamin was a steam engineer for the railroads and lived a fairly itinerant life. He married a second time many years later and eventually he and Edith retired to Oklahoma where he died shortly before his sister Sarah Jane. He was apparently out of touch with his siblings and he is not mention in the obituaries either of his brothers who died in 1942 and 1943.
